Road and Building Research Institute (R&BRI) started its journey in 1967 as a reliable testing and research unit under the Public Works (Roads) Directorate, Government of West Bengal. From the start, this Institute has been entrusted with various types of quality control and engineering investigation activities in different sectors i.e. building, bridge and highway construction activities. RBRI also has provisions for field training of the engineers.

This Institute has following two units under the control of the Chief Engineer & Director, R&BRI:

• 1) Road and Building Research Institute, P.O. Pailan Hat, District-South 24 Parganas, and
• 2) Quality Control Laboratory, Noukaghat, Siliguri, District- Darjeeling.

These two units are equipped with different kinds of field and laboratory equipment for collection of field-samples and carrying on quality-control lab-tests. Apart from that, different research works for development of better specifications of different Civil Engineering works and preparation of better & cost-effective mix-designs for concrete and bituminous works are also the aim of this Institution.
